Satoyamapunk is an artistic, philosophical, and social movement that envisions and works toward reinstalling an upgraded “satoyama OS” merging cutting edge technologies and satoyama, a Japanese term that embraces the idea that human life is part of the natural cycle in the mountains.
The term “satoyama” encapsulates an ecological village and lifestyle contrasting with an industrialised city and ultra-capitalistic urban living. Meanwhile, the term “punk” refers to the countercultural and post-capitalist enthusiasm, aimed at cultivating decentralized and semi-autonomous ways of living.
Central to our ethos is the conviction that satoyama is fundamental to craftsmanship. Satoyamapunk is a movement that embraces the idea that everyone is an artisan, encouraging everyone to contribute to preserving traditional knowhow and craftsmanship in the natural ecosystem.
里山パンクは、人間の暮らしが山の自然循環の一部だと考える里山と最先端テクノロジーとを融合させ、アップグレードされた「里山OS」の再インストールを構想し、活動する芸術的・哲学的・社会的ムーブメントである。
「里山」という用語は、工業化された都市や超資本主義的な都市生活とは対照的なエコロジカルな村やライフスタイルを表し、「パンク」という用語は、分散化された半自律的な暮らしを創造するためのカウンターカルチャーやポスト資本主義への熱意を指す。
里山パンクは、人間は誰もが職人であり、誰もがものづくりの伝統的な知識や手法を未来に繋げていくことができるという考えを持ったムーブメントだ。
Background
The term satoyamapunk was coined in 2023 by a few members of Mujun Collective, an art collective whose members include craftsmen, artists, researchers, thinkers, and builders that came together to reinstall satoyama in Yunotsu, a small town in Shimane, Japan. The term and concept are inspired by solarpunk, but satoyamapunk has been developed from the joy and excitement of satoyama building, crafting, and physical labor and instead of concepts and literatures.
里山パンクという言葉は、2023年、島根県の小さな町、温泉津に里山を再設置するために集まった職人、アーティスト、デザイナー、研究者、思想家、建築家などをメンバーとするアート集団「Mujun Collective」の数人のメンバーによって作られた。この言葉やコンセプトはソーラーパンクにインスパイアされたものだが、里山パンクは概念や文学ではなく、里山づくり、ものづくり、肉体労働の喜びや楽しさから発展したものである。

主要概念と哲学
Satoyoama | 里山
Satoyama represents the idea that human life is part of the natural cycle in the moutains. The difference between a mountain and a satoyama: A mountain has no human involvement. Satoyama is a mountain where humans are involved, but it is still in circulation.
Sato: a natural circulation (or an environment) in which human life is a part of
Satoyama: a circumstance or physical space where human livelihoods are part of the natural circulation of the mountain.
人間の暮らしも自然循環の一部という考え方に基づいて生まれた状況。山は人間が関与していないものだが、里山は人間が関与しつつも循環している山。
里：人間の暮らしが関与している自然循環のこと
里山：人間の暮らしが山の自然循環の一部になっているという状況もしくは物理的空間
Reclaiming the obvious | あたりまえを取り戻す
そもそもの普遍的な価値（そもそもあたり前のこと）を取り戻そうとして里山再生をしている。

It echoes Joseph Beuys’ famous quote “Every Man is An Artist.”
戦後ドイツを代表する芸術家ヨーゼフ・ボイス（Joseph Beuys）の「人間は誰もが芸術家である」という主張に呼応する。
